Kinetic notations for the visual and performing arts is a systematic, intuitive and fundamental transgression of musical notation to the theatre, visual arts and dance. It will not only enable composers to leave the boundaries of music, but also visual artist, choreographers and theatre / opera directors to approach the fields they work in from a compositional perspective, to create ex imaginatione, facilitate analyses and preserve their work for future generations. This treatise discusses the fields of 1. light / light art, 2. scene design / installation art (including video / new media art and the creation of kinetic sculptures), 3. theatre / performance art and 4. dance / movement. All chapters are structured in the same way. Firstly, they comprise an overview of previous methods of notation already employed in the respective field. Secondly, the techniques of this field are discussed. Thirdly, an art historic overview is given. The notational methods will be presented alongside the discussion of the techniques / artworks. This treatise serves as a rich source for unconventional composition, but also as a reference for the techniques and histories of visual and performing art forms. Kinetic notations is the first book of its kind. It may be considered the necessary, yet more intuitive continuation of Extended notation: The depiction of the unconventional – a notation system for extended instrumental playing / vocal techniques and electroacoustic music.

In the study of music, most of the extended instrumental playing techniques, as well as electroacoustic music in general, are still deprived of conventional methods of notation. In order to facilitate the utilisation of these musical elements, this book develops a coherent and consistent notation system. It contains chapters on string instruments, wind instruments, percussion instruments, plucked instruments, keyboard instruments, and vocal techniques, as well as sound synthesis, audio processing, and sound recording. All relevant techniques are explained in detail. Previous methods of their notation are presented and discussed, as well as a simple and exact method of notation that may be combined with the traditional notation suggested for every technique. The book can be used as a guide on extended and electroacoustic instrumentation for composition students and lecturers, musicologists, composers, performers, music arrangers, sound engineers, and editors. Composers interested in augmented means of sound production are encouraged to employ the suggested system, elaborate it, or use it as a source of inspiration.

Biographie

Christian Dimpker ist Komponist und Kunsttheoretiker mit akademischen Studien in Philosophie, Geschichte und Sound Studies sowie Promotion in der Musikwissenschaft / Komposition. Dimpkers Kompositionen erforschen unkonventionelle Bereiche der Notation. Dieses ermöglicht ein weitreichendes Notationssystem für erweiterte instrumentale Spieltechniken und die elektroakustische Musik. Diese Abhandlung mit dem Titel Extended notation: The depiction of the unconventional wird vom LIT Verlag herausgegeben. Derzeit weitet Dimpker seine Arbeit auf die Bereiche Bildende Kunst, Theater und Bewegung aus. Die Monographie Kinetic notations for the visual and performing arts bildet die Grundlage dieser Arbeit. Sie wird 2024 im transcript-Verlag / über die Columbia University Press erscheinen. Residenzen u.a. in der Cité des Arts Paris, im EMS Stockholm, Tokyo Arts and Space, Asia Culture Center, Künstlerdorf Schöppingen und Stipendien des / der Berliner Senats (Konzertförderung, Kulturaustausch Japan / Schweden), Bundesregierung, E.ON-Stiftung, Lotto-Stiftung, Deutschen Künstlerhilfe, Musikfonds, GEMA. Biography

Christian Dimpker is a composer and art theorist with academic studies in Philosophy, History and Sound Studies as well as a doctoral dissertation in Musicology / Composition. Dimpker’s compositions explore unconventional fields of notation. This is enabled by an extensive notation system for extended playing techniques and electroacoustic music. This treatise with the title Extended notation: The depiction of the unconventional has been released by the LIT Verlag publishers. Currently, Dimpker further extends this research to the fields of visual arts, theatre and dance. The monograph Kinetic notations for the visual and performing arts forms the basis of this work. It will be released in 2024 by Transcript Publishing / Columbia University Press. Scores are published by Universal Edition Vienna. Residencies inter alia at Cité des Arts Paris, EMS Stockholm, Asia Culture Center, Tokyo Arts and Space, Kuenstlerdorf Schoeppingen. Grants by the Berlin senate, German government, E.ON foundation, Lotto foundation, German Artist Fund, Musikfonds, GEMA. Performances in Germany, Japan, France, South Korea, Portugal, Australia, Serbia, the USA, England, Sweden and Romania (International Contemporary Ensemble / Contemporary Insights / Elision Ensemble / Ensemble 2e2m / Ensemble Resonanz).
